Geocaching: A failed experiment.

Last night we raced home so we could head out and nab a quick 1/1 that we missed this weekend on account of not wanting to pay $5 for the privilege of parking on their property. No problem! Just before we went out, we downloaded three more in that general area to hit on an entirely spontaneous basis. How spontaneous? So spontaneous that we skipped our usual step of carefully printing out the cache info for each one (which, you will recall, is on my list of burdensome responsibilities). This turned out to be an arrestingly stupid idea. Lessons learned: (1) If you don't even know what *size* of a cache you're looking for (ammo can? pill bottle?), you have absolutely no idea where in all those cubic yards of space to look. (2) There is much valuable info in the Web logs left by previous hunters, so bring it along and use it. (3) If you fail to print out the hint and bring it, you will inevitably need it (and of course misinterpreting hints is *also* my job).

We were able to find one of the caches just by sheer dumb luck. The place had a really creepy feeling, but it's hard to put my finger on why. A few previous hunters had commented on it as well; one remarked that it was a great place to hide a body. Sometimes there are vagrants in the area, and we saw evidence of recent activity but nobody was there at the time (thank goodness). The paved trail curved through plants growing 8-10 feet overhead, so it had a sort of spooky cornfield vibe, and it dead-ended out of sight of the road. Even the blackberries tasted vaguely sinister; I ate several to confirm it. We TNLN, signed the log and rabbited on out of there.

One of the gcs we DNF turned out to be a nice ramble in a park on the high Kent ridge where people like to walk their dogs. Without the paperwork we had no notion of what we were looking for, but we gamely bushwhacked through the holly nonetheless. Then we sat on a bench and watched the last rosy glow fade from the sky while the crescent moon brightened. Now that we have the documentation, we will definitely go back there.

We have a lead on a Jeep in a cache out in the boonies, so we plan to eel out the door a little early tonight and see if we can find it. S is afire to get his hands on a Jeep, so wish us luck!

ETA: Well crap. Never mind. Somebody else already went out and snaffled it--LAST NIGHT. We'll never get a Jeep. Ever.

What's a Jeep? Besides a vehicle, I mean.

It's a little toy Jeep attached to a travel bug tag. There are several thousand of them around (the what, country? world?). If you can grab one, you log it and take a picture with it and then each month somebody will win a top-of-the-line Garmin GPS unit. That would sure be nice to have. There's also a sweepstakes to win a 2007 Jeep Compass. I guess that would *also* be nice to have. S located another Jeep up on Tiger Mountain, but do I want to schlep up a mountain in the dark? He'd do it, though.
