On the off chance that somebody may care, here are my thoughts on the American Idol season 2 finale. Hell, anybody who has read this thing knows that I've been behind Clay all the way. Putting it plainly, he is a better singer than Ruben. Ruben's voice has been hoarse and rough for weeks and he seems to have lost some of his early control. This may be attributable to sheer fatigue. Clay is virtually perfect week after week, song after song. His technical consistency is amazing and kind of eerie. I enjoyed watching Ruben perform, but I was ecstatic watching Clay perform.

Do I think Clay should have won? Yes, but not by any kind of landslide. The vote difference was just over 1,300. The early online articles said 130,000 but that was wrong. My high school had about 1,300 kids in it. I tried dialing in my vote for a solid hour and 45 minutes Tuesday night and never got through. Not once. So 1,300 votes means a few people like me couldn't get through the phone lines. Hardly a sweeping victory for Ruben.

That said, I really do like Ruben. How can you not like the Velvet Teddy Bear? He seems to be an uncomplicated, sweet-natured guy, and his love for singing just radiates in his face every time. I think he would make a superb gospel star. And it's a victory for non-white, non-skinny performers the world over.

However, I ended up with a world-class crush on Clay. The hair and makeup artists worked a miracle on him, and he turned out absolutely gorgeous. My male co-workers cannot understand his appeal, and all I can say is that they have the wrong chromosome set and will never understand. I just found out tonight that he's 6'1"--an inch taller than me. Yow yow yow. I have to go lie down for a while.

Good luck, Clay and Ruben. I look forward to the CDs.

p.s. No, my snarklings, I will not get caught up in the American Idol Juniors show that's in the works! Geez!

Okay, was Clay the one with the eyebrows?

Among other things, yes!

He was the tall, skinny white kid...with the eyebrows. :-)

...and I hear that there's going to be...

...a new American-Idol-like model show. Just what the world needs. Another one I bet you'll miss.

See, this article didn't surprise me in the least. The week before, I dialed in my votes for quite some little time, and about 10 percent of my calls went through. This week? Not a single damn call. S says the phone companies knew this big vote night was coming up and they should have done something to prepare for it. What exactly, I don't know...

Ah yes, American Idol Jr.s

A show clearly designed to ferret out bad parents. And as a by product, destroy the self esteem of hundreds if not thousands of pre adolescent youth. How can you not watch!?! Just when you think FOX can go no lower...

Scott.

Yes, J and I thought Clay was better too.

How can I not watch? Let me count the ways! Watching spazzy kids and listening to their shrieky little caterwauls makes my fillings itch. Remember that I am the Jenny Appleseed of vasectomies.

But you're absolutely right. The spectacle of AIJR is obviously going to be the parents. Remember that case where the cheerleader's mom supposedly hired somebody to whack a rival? Now that kind of drama, I'd watch.

I'm with you

I don't find children charming.
Can't imagine a reason to tune in to watch them try to sound like grown - ups.
I see bad parenting at the grocery store.
Don't need it on TV, too.
