Tonight's American Idol.
Mar. 25th, 2003 09:10 pmLife is ashes. How can I express my bitter, leaden disappointment? All day, nay, all WEEK I have been looking forward to Disco Night. I wanted to hear Corey mangle the BeeGees. I wanted Clay to put on a leather jacket and construction helmet and sing "Macho Man." But they changed the theme, and what to my horrified ears should appear but--COUNTRY ROCK. I don't hate country rock, but it's not anywhere on my top ten list of favorite musical genres. I'll spare everybody except S & J the gory details and drop the rest of this behind a
Joshua, the country-boy Marine, was on first dressed like Garth Brooks. I think he even sang a GB song. I will give him his due and say that he was totally in his element. He whipped the crowd into kind of a frenzy with an uptempo song, racing around, leaving the stage and singing directly to the fans. It's entirely possible that some producer out there sat up and took notice, thinking "The kid can sing, he's got that jingoistic military thing going for him, he's not bad-looking, and the 'AI finalist' hype can't hurt either." Maybe somebody out there will offer him something. Who knows?
Trenyce...Poor Trenyce. She's a diva, not a Dixie Chick. Her song choice didn't thrill anybody, she obviously hates this kind of music, and she looked totally ill at ease. Usually after her performance she is very gracious, but this time she looked like she's got incipient appendicitis. She agreed with Simon that she didn't do all that well. But I think she still has a ton of fans and will come back next week stronger than ever with some Diana Ross or something.
Here's where I get all out of order. I know brunette Kimberly came on somewhere around here. She sang well, probably, but I thought the song was boring.
Blonde Kimberly apparently listened to my dear S, because tonight she sang a man's song. She has a deep-ish voice and little range, and all along S has been saying she should sing the male part of songs. It seemed to work for her tonight, although I feel she shouted a lot of the way through it. She looked terrific, though.
Little Carmen turned 18 today, and for a present she got a performance that didn't suck. She sang something uptempo, and finally her incessant yodeling wasn't such a drawback with this country style.
Just what the heck was Corey doing to that poor defenseless song? What did "Drift Away" ever do to him? (Oh come on, people, you know this song: "Gimme a beat, boys, and [something? soothe?] my soul, I wanna get lost in the rock and roll and drift away.") Paula's nuts about Corey's voice. I don't see it myself.
Ricky sang some other ballad-y thing that left me bored silly until the final five-note run, which was beautiful and unique. I'm sure glad I have all this stuff on videotape. Maybe S will help me make a video compilation. Those last five notes would be on it.
Julia the Beeyotch sang (or should I say mugged her way through) a Faith Hill song called "Breathe." She still oversings and she still looks totally insincere up there. Maybe this week we'll get rid of her for good.
Ruuuuuuuben! I have to admit, I was a little nervous about how Ruben would handle country rock. But he came out and "represented" for the 205 (Birmingham, y'all) with "Sweet Home Alabama" and the crowd loved it. He put a beautiful pseudo-gospel feeling into it and it was obvious that he loves his town, his state, and performing. I'm beginning to think he could sing the recipe for Potato Buds and the crowd would stand for him.
I'm a little worried about the divine Clay after tonight. I think Simon was right when he said this week's song sounded exactly like last week's. There was nothing country or rocking about it; it was a sweet, melancholy song. I don't know if Clay couldn't find a song that fit his singing style or what, but between this and the impending Disco Night, I'm feeling apprehensive...
One of my teammates at the TJTAMB is also totally into A.I., so I'll commiserate with him about the lack of disco goodness. Still think they should do a Schoolhouse Rock night. I'd love to hear Ruben doing "I'm Just A Bill." Carmen could do "Interjections." Clay could do "Little TwelveToes." Trenyce could do "The Great American Melting Pot." I think I'm on to something here!

Date: 2003-03-25 10:15 pm (UTC)I love Clay, but...ummm...what is he thinking?
Ruben *sigh* what a voice, what an attitude, what weird grace.
Trenyce, brunette Kimberly, Ricky...yeah, whatever...
Blond Kimberly looked awfully darn cute and sang sweetly as well. I am more impressed by her tonight than I have been before. Doesn't do much for me overall, though.
Country rock was made for Carmen. I'm not nuts about her voice, and yet there's something about her that I like. Don't know what it is and don't want to delve to deep to try to discover what it is.
Julia sounded better tonight than ever before. Instead of sucking like a black hole, she sucked more like a drain in a sink.
Corey should die.
Oh, and...
Date: 2003-03-25 10:20 pm (UTC)Who should sing "Mr Morton"?
Corey should die.
