Tonight's American Idol.
Mar. 18th, 2003 10:48 pmTonight was kind of interesting because I watched the show out of order: the 9-10 hour first as it was being broadcast, and then the 8-9 hour (taped) afterward. Tonight was also Movie Night where contestants were supposed to choose the song from any movie that best "evoked" them, or some such nonsense. May I say that I have never heard such a boring, insipid lot of songs in all my born days. I kept hoping somebody would belt out something from "Cabaret" but then realized that would best evoke me, and that's not really the same thing at all...
Because it's late and I want to go to bed, this will be quick (and out of order, of course). Charles: Enh. Whatever. Outclassed. He doesn't have the wind to get through an upbeat song. Julie: Bitch is going down soon. She was pretty well crucified by the judges and she is still such an overbearing snot. Blonde Kimberly: I still like her because she's perky and kind of goofy, but she has hardly any range and hasn't settled into a sound for herself yet. Brunette Kimberly: Also, enh. Sometimes I think she does a really good job of hitting this note or that note, but I don't really enjoy watching her perform. Ricky: I can't remember what he sang, something high-pitched at any rate. The female judges dig him and Simon thinks he's a nice guy. If they ever have Opera Night, he will rule. Joshua: He has decided that he's a country singer. That's okay. I don't like the song he sang tonight and I don't like country music, but I will say that I think he did a very good job tonight anyway. But he's got to stop making those painful, omigod-I'm-coming faces when he sings. He's scaring me. Corey: Okay, I thought Corey sucked the big root tonight. He was awful, dreadful, out of tune, wretched to watch. Carmen: Thank you, Paula, for implying that she needs to lay off the slut makeup. I don't think Carmen is a very good singer and I get bored watching her perform. Trenyce: She's kind of funny-looking, actually, but she has beautiful eyes. I think she is a very appealing performer even though I don't really like the songs she chooses. She must have some heavy charisma to win me over anyway! Ruuuuuuuben still has an amazing voice and I still want to hear him do something from the Deuteronomy role in "Cats." Since this will never happen, I'll be content to listen to him sing every week until he is booted, which must eventually happen. I like to listen to his voice, but I much prefer to watch his face while listening. He shows such a love for singing. And finally there's Clay. I think Clay is a singer's singer. (However, he completely blew the final note in the song "Somewhere Out There.") Gladys Knight, tonight's celebrity "judge," commented on the same thing I've been feeling about Clay's looks. There's something very magical and pure and sort of ethereal about his face as a whole, even though the individual components are kind of goofy (the hair! the ears!). Simon said he thinks Clay is the one everyone will have to work hard to beat in this competition. I think Simon scared the hell out of Clay tonight, or at least surprised him greatly. I would buy a CD by Ruben or Clay if they recorded songs that captured the soul of their voices.
And with that, it's Sudafed time. Curse this hay fever/allergy thing.
