I'm just stunned, shocked. Tamyra was voted off American Idol tonight. The only people more horrified than I am are her family and the judges. The looks on their faces...

You have to understand that Tamyra has never even been called down to the elimination area. Each week they have identified the two (or more) contestants who had the lowest phone-in vote totals. Tamyra has always been safe. On Tuesday's show, one of her two songs was weak, but the other was great. Every other performance she's ever given has been clearly superior. And this time she got the lowest number of votes and was eliminated from the show.

The other contestant with low votes was Nikki, who has been mostly dreadful. She sings from her nose and throat, speaks half the lyrics and screeches the other half, and misses most of her notes. From the look on her face, it seemed like she knew it was a crime and a travesty that Tamyra was going home and she was staying on. But you know who looked pretty satisfied? Kelly. I feel like she has always been jealous of Tamyra's performances, even though her own critiques were almost as good.

At this point I don't know if I can even finish watching the season. I just hope Justin wins the whole thing now. At least it would make the 12-year-old girls happy. There has been a lot of talk about voting blocs and people using autodialers to influence the votes. This seems perfectly plausible, and if even 100 people were putting through 10,000 votes a night for their favorite performer (as the numbers seem to say), that would represent almost 10 percent of the total calls received.

The only good thing to come out of this is I am positive Tamyra will still end up with a recording contract. Randy promised to do whatever he could to help her, and I think Simon has every intention of offering her a deal. His wink spoke volumes.

Tamyra, you were the best contestant the show will ever see. Carry on and be strong, girl. Hope to see your CD in the stores not too long from now.

Oh, no!

Everything I've ever read about the show said that Tamyra was outstanding. This is the problem with popularity contests of any sort -- including the Hugo and Nebula. I hope she gets the contract and kicks butt in the real world.
