The big ish is that our dear friends K & C are back in the land of the online. They probably exist IRL too, but if I can't see them or drink out of their glass, then what good does that do me? It's great, though, to be able to communicate via e-mail and LJ and Messenger.

My entries are growing few and far between, except for the occasional private entry that I make to help me think through an issue. I attribute this partly to the heat and partly to the fact that nothing new is happening, at least nothing good. Maybe I should just adopt a numbering system:

1 will denote a rant about the heat.
2 is a panic attack about not having a job.
3 means time spent with friends "X" and "Y" doing "Z."
4 was an outing with S.
5 represents various permutations of the topic of American Idol.

How would this work? Let's see:

1, but could be worse. High 70s to low 80s.

2222222, staved off thanks only to the world's most generous She.

3, lunch, Peggy and Julie, some 22222222 and a little 1.

4, but only to take my car in for its scheduled maintenance, so this probably doesn't count.

What is hoving into view for the week? Tuesday S has a hair appointment. I promise not to let Rick give him the Shaun Cassidy look again. That night is American Idol. Wednesday night is Book Club and the AI results show. Thursday is the club with all the attendant angst that goes along with trying to get dressed. I loved the whole corset thing last week, and S had it pulled *really* tight by the end of the night. It felt great, but I could hardly breathe or think and was starting to feel dizzy. But tight is good, isn't it? Isn't it? I think I'm asking the wrong audience. Besides, I can't wear that corset every week. I know what I want to try, but it involves long-suffering PMB letting me borrow a black chemise top so I can try to wear the other corset and see if we can get it to look right.

Gotta go! My Sonata has kicked in and I'm at maximum likelihood of falling asleep.

CORSET?!

I demand a repeat! Darn! :) That's what I get for leaving town...

...and how IS "Sailing"? I've heard bad things for those 2 books, so I haven't read them. However, what I heard was, "Oh, those? I heard they were bad..."

Not an actual bad review from someone who had actually READ them.

I love his books. (I despise HIM.) But Fionavar has bits in it where I have to put the book down because I can't see through the tears.

Yay! You're back from your trip. Or maybe I should be more sympathetic and say it's sad that you're back from your trip.

This was the 3rd time I've worn this corset, so I'll definitely wear it again. It never gets any easier. PMB has the right idea: Wear the dang things all the time. But that's hard to do out here in suburban South County.

I had started to read Sarantium once before and couldn't get past the first 40 pages of mind-numbing boredom. After that, there's a little more boredom and then the story starts. It kept me engaged because the main characters are complex and interesting, and nothing is black and white. But I don't know anything at all (or care that much) about Byzantium or that era in history, and GGK should have included a map. I agree completely about parts of the Fionavar books, and Sarantium has none of that beauty.

I think this is a case of where GGK fell so in love with this world and this story that he didn't care whether or not it was accessible to the rest of us. There's a surprising amount of exposition, but very little happens. He also repeatedly does this extremely annoying thing of saying something like "If only he had gone back to his room to talk to character X, the fate of the world would have turned out completely differently. But he didn't." "If only character Y had been there instead, the fate of the world..."

All in all, in retrospect I'm glad I read it because of the characterizations, but it never would have happened without Book Club. If you don't have a stack of more desirable books to read, and if you can push past the first 60 pages or so, you may find a not-too-shabby historical fantasy in there somewhere.

It's been so helpful to write this to you! Maybe I can just print it out and take it to Book Club (sans corset references). Will we see you Thursday? Is there a theme?

The trip to Oregon was fun, though I'm quite well-cooked (evil Orb!) - it's okay to be back. :)

I will be there on Thursday, but I have no theme in mind. Depending upon the weather, I might wear the shiny PVC.

Or just-black. :)

How's about I just make you a black chemise of your very own? It only takes about 2 hours of sewing time, tops. Maybe I'll do that today, if I decide I want to (still) ignore some other projects I've got laying about on the dining room table. wink
