Aug. 5th, 2006 06:55 pmOf course I can refuse Kij nothing, so here goes: "List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your Livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to."
Hmmm... Here are seven songs I'm really into right now because they're on my iPod playlist for walking, so I hear them a lot. I originally heard them on my Pandora station, "Oontz!" This is weird because I seeded that station heavily on the industrial/EBM side, but it has gradually oozed (hah! maybe I should change the name) into other areas.
"Everyone Who Casts A Shadow," Wolfsheim - I'm not all that big a Wolfsheim fan, but there's just something about this slower-tempo, quirky-beat tune that appeals to me. It's quite simple (and grammatically jarring), but I love it, and it's my favorite way to start a walk. Curse you, hooky little song!
"Longevity," Assemblage 23 - I had heard *of* Assemblage 23, of course, but hadn't heard any of their stuff. Frustratingly, I lack the vocabulary to describe music or what it is that I like about a given song. Chris R. needs to jump in here and articulate why this is such a good song. There is an underlying slow power, and the vocals are dreamy and haunting. Shawn says it reminds him of some of Gary Numan's more recent slow and dark songs. This is a good song for a lap that I need to walk more slowly. I'd like to hear more of their stuff.
"The Need Machine," Foetus (Franz Treichler mix) - This is a wonderfully ponderous, sinister, sly dirge. It starts off with "I recommend you seek professional help" and slithers into "They'll drift round your psychology / like buckshot methodology / while auctioning your daily methadone." What's not to like? It absolutely does not lend itself to walking, as it's too slow and the beat is...disturbing. But I listen to it anyway because I looooove it.
"The Circle," Babble - This is a Thompson Twins spinoff. I don't like anything else they do, but this is another song that got its hooks into me (musically and lyrically) and won't let go. It makes me grin like an idiot, and I do my best walking to it.
"Until," Psyche - Allmusic.com refers to Psyche as "goth's most fully formed little secret." This song is slow, dark, dreamy synthpop. I like to listen to it on one of the laps when I'm on autopilot.
"The Center of the Sun," Conjure One - Listen, I have no idea why I like this song. It's not a genre I usually like, and it's a *female* vocalist (somebody named Poe) -- which is usually a huge yuck for me! Maybe it's the Rhys Fulber influence. Regardless, this song is both soft and powerful at the same time. A good lap.
"You Almost Made It Out," Corrina Repp - Brace yourselves, because this is another female vocalist! This song is very slow and quiet and haunting, and I think the title refers to Orpheus/Eurydice although that's not what the song is about. I don't know what other song to compare it with because I don't have much frame of reference. This is too slow to walk to, so sometimes I just sit and listen to it before going home.
Want to hear the funniest thing? I paid good money to download each of these from iTunes. What kind of freak pays for music these days?
I'm not going to tag anybody, but if you want to play, go ahead! You know I'll read ya!
